In the last few years there has been an increase of not just yoga around the world but specifically kids yoga. I think it's wonderful that young children are exposed to the benefits, both physically and mentally. This article provides some great points to consider, not just for children but for everyone.
When I was in Greece I had this beautiful broccoli soup, so I decided to come up with my own version of it. To make it thicker and creamier I added hemp seeds, which are lighter than cashews and is a wonderful source of protein. The health benefits of broccoli is extensive, loaded with essential nutrients, being a rich source of vitamin C, A, K and B as well as containing high levels of fiber. This readily available vegetable promotes the production of enzymes that help protect heart blood vessels as well contain an enzyme which can reduce the risk of developing cancer, as long as you don't overcook it. This soup takes about 10 mins to make, all it requires at the end of blending so it's easy and quick to prepare.
Jim Kallett, a senior Bikram Yoga teacher, who graduated in 1997 during Bikram's 5th Yoga Teacher Training, owner of Bikram Yoga San Diego is hosting a 13 week internet radio talk show where he discusses everything to do with yoga, and how it addresses the fundamental questions and concerns of life. It will focus on some history of Yoga, especially in the West, what is Yoga, current trends and what it means, the practical application of Yoga, proper techniques, safety, effective use, precautions, and the reality. How the proper practice of Yoga is the best, safest, most scientific tool for improving the quality and longevity of one’s life . This first week focuses on What is Yoga? “Happily, as Yoga has become so increasingly more accessible and practiced by more and more people around the world, I am excited to be able to contribute to the redirection of the discussion of Yoga (especially Bikram Yoga), back to it’s primary principles, to the practice of Hatha Yoga Asana done safely, effectively, and properly. It’s more important than ever….” Jim Kallett Time for a detox - I embarked on a 4 day juice cleanse with Pure Glow Cleanse. I came across their website looking at a few juice companies in Perth and theirs connected with me the best. The two ladies Annette and Jacqueline came up with the idea of cold pressed juices in 2013 and once they put their heads together, Pure Glow was born. Anette also runs Wellness WA, a site devoted to all things to do with health, beauty and wellbeing here in WA. Sometimes you have to trust your intuition and I loved what they had to offer. I'm not stranger to juices and I've done a few cleanses in the past, including the master cleanse, but I thought it would be nice to document it, including any detox symptoms I feel for anyone out there thinking about it or wanting to try one :)
I thought these cute and fun watercolour pictures fruits and vegetables in yoga postures were adorable! If they can do, I'm sure you can too!
Watercress has just topped the list as the most nutritious vegetable in a new research by the William Peterson University in New Jersey, beating better known greens such as chard, spinach and kale. It has a spicy tang to it much like arugula and can be used in salads and soups. This easy to make salad combines it with the sweetness of apple and creaminess of avocado, giving it the perfect balance of deliciousness.
An acidic diet can cause emotional distress in the body, toxic overload and lead to many health problems. The typical american diet is high in acid and low in alkaline so to restore health the diet should be 80% alkaline and 20% acidic. This salad features foods that are alkaline forming and will help restore PH balance in the body, not to mention taste delicious!
A Bikram class is meant to be very challenging, pushing one's boundaries mentally, physically and emotionally. As teachers we try to do what we can to provide a safe and knowledgeable environment for people to be in. These helpful hints is something that you can work towards yourself, taking the focus to your practice postures.
This account of a 30 day practice is inspiring. It showcases how much a body can change after a consistent yoga practice. One thing that stood out in the article, which I'm sure many of us can relate to was:
"I'm surprised I like Bikram yoga. 5 or 6 years ago, I tried it out and didn’t like that every class features the same sequence of poses or that certain postures were not included. I remember thinking it was a bit dangerous for me to be stretching so aggressively and I was worried I’d injure myself... What a difference 6 years makes! Bikram is the same, but now I’m loving it. I can see that the sequence of postures “unlocks” the body one part at a time (like peeling an onion). I love the HEAT." |
"I am not what happened to me,
I am what I choose to become" Carl Gustave Jung I'm Binny, a full time Bikram Yoga teacher and studio owner that lives in Perth, Australia.
I started this blog to share the things I love the best in the world: being healthy and happy, food (especially raw), yoga, traveling and most importantly, learning how to love and be true to myself. I suffered from severe digestive problems when I was younger, being gluten and lactose intolerant, and developed compartment syndrome and fibromyalgia in my teens. I have lived with constant pain for over 16 years now. Over the past 10 years, I've shifted to a mainly plant based diet and realised that being well and healthy is a way of life. I have been teaching Bikram yoga since 2011, in the US and Australia. Due to my health issues I've also had a lot of bodywork done as well as explored alternative therapies. I've become much more aware of myself as a result of all this - physically, mentally, spiritually and emotionally. Right now I love my life. In my career I love what I do and I do what I love. I have traveled to some amazing places around the world and made lifelong friends. In between working and traveling, I cook up a storm in the kitchen, especially raw desserts, spend time with the people I love the best, which now includes a yoga husband, a mini yogini Estell, and our dog! I try to listen to my body the best I can. I truly believe that we all have the power and the capabilities to heal our own bodies, to nourish the spirit and seek our own happiness and life's purpose.
